When you need this
A panel that is out of open breaker slots, an older fuse box instead of breakers, a renovation or addition that adds significant load, or adding a standby generator or EV charger that the existing service cannot support. What Southampton Town actually charges — a real, current number
Unlike the national cost estimates above, this one is a primary source: the Town of Southampton's Electrical Permit Fee Schedule, effective January 2, 2026, charges a flat permit fee of $200 for a service up to 200 amps, $300 for 300 amps, and $400 for 400 amps or more — a clean $1 per amp across all three tiers, whether or not that was the Town's intent. A roughly 3% credit-card surcharge applies on top. The same schedule prices a temporary construction service and a service reconnect at $200 each. The Town's own form requires the contractor's Suffolk County electrical license number and its expiration date, and the fee schedule states plainly that the National Electrical Code is enforced "at both the town and village levels."

Do I need a permit for a generator, EV charger or outdoor lighting in Southampton?
Yes, all three are separately permitted electrical work under the Town of Southampton's own 2026 fee schedule: a generator is a flat $200, an EV charging station is $100 each, and outdoor or landscape/pool lighting is $200 — one code covers both landscape and pool-adjacent fixtures under a single filing. The standard electrical permit application has dedicated fields for a generator's size and fuel type and for the number of EV chargers being installed, and it requires the contractor's Suffolk County electrical license number. A roughly 3% credit-card surcharge applies to fees paid by card. Will old wiring affect my homeowners insurance?
It can, depending on the type, not simply the age of the house. Aluminum wiring, common in some homes built in the 1960s and 70s, is widely restricted by standard insurers — a 2011 federal safety finding put it at 55 times more likely than copper to reach a fire-hazard connection — and many carriers require an inspection or repairs before covering a home that has it.
